A franchise business is a business in which the owner, or "franchisor" licenses the rights to its business names, logos, systems and models, and sales of its products or services, to an independent third party known as the "franchisee". This licensing usually involves the exchange of an initial fee and/or ongoing fees based on revenue or profit for a defined period of time. The franchisor may or may not provide ongoing support, training, marketing, and financing for the franchisee.
Many people wonder how to start a business and "buying" a franchise is one way of doing so. Entrepreneurs may be drawn to the brand name, success story, business model, or product/service of a particular franchisor. They may value the opportunity to be part of a system yet still an independent business owner. Popular franchises have major brand-name recognition which increases the likelihood that potential customers are familiar with the business. This can ease some of the strains of starting a business from scratch. See the "What is a franchise business" question above for more definitions.

We believe that women-owned businesses will continue to thrive in the decades to come and we want to do all we can to help them succeed. According to the 2017 American Express OPEN annual report on the "State of Women-Owned Businesses", the number of women-owned businesses has more than doubled in the last twenty years. The report also said that of all the women-owned firms, 5.4 million of them (46%) were owned by minority women.
